Consumers are increasingly turning to online grocery shopping for convenience and variety. As more stores offer online ordering, and as mobile devices become more popular, the trend is likely to continue. In the UK the major retailers offer online grocery delivery including Tesco, Sainsbury's, and Morrison's offering the most extensive offerings.

Discount chains like Lidl and Aldi have boosted their market share, which is putting pressure on the upscale British grocery store. However, Waitrose still ranks first in a recent study conducted by Market Force Information on customer opinions of seven supermarket chains. The survey was conducted with 4,300 people who rated supermarkets on assortment layout, cleanliness, and appearance.

In the course of the coronavirus pandemic Waitrose has introduced additional measures to protect customers and staff. Customers are required to bring only one person to shop and wear a mask or scarf. Hand sanitisers are located in the front of every shop. Waitrose offers a Volunteer's Card for customers who are self-isolating, allowing family members and friends to purchase items on behalf of the customer.
