The luxurious British grocer has faced increasing competition from discount chains such as Lidl and Aldi and Aldi, which are growing their market share. Nevertheless, Waitrose still ranks first in a recent survey by Market Force Information on customer perceptions of seven supermarket chains. The survey was conducted with 4300 customers who rated supermarkets based on their assortment, layout and cleanliness.

Waitrose has taken a variety of steps to protect both customers and staff during the coronavirus outbreak. Customers are asked to send only one person shopping and wear a scarf or mask. In every shop there are hand sanitisers. Waitrose offers the Volunteer's Card for customers who self-isolate, allowing family and friends to pick up orders on behalf of the shopper.
