To use this service, simply select the store's location on your Smith's app then shop and place your order, then select a pickup time and parking space. When you arrive at your chosen location, park in your designated spot and dial a number to inform an associate that you're there. The associate will carry your order to you in the parking area.

Peapod is the first to offer online grocery shopping. It is available in 24 US markets. In certain markets, customers can order and get groceries, pantry products fresh produce and meats, dairy organic and natural food items, prepared meals and school and office supplies delivered. Customers can also pick up alcohol and personal items. Customers also can collect their orders at more than 200 Peapod pickup locations, the majority of which are located within Ahold USA-owned brick and mortar stores, such as Stop & Shop.

Peapod uses data to identify the brands that are popular with shoppers and items which allows the online retailer to recommend similar products. It also lets shoppers view all items in their cart at a glance and use filters to narrow the results. Since shopping for groceries is a habit-driven practice, the Skokie company in Illinois uses data to predict what items the customer will purchase, pushing these items towards the top of the list.

The company's service is based on its drivers, also known as brand ambassadors. "Food is a very emotional experience," Bienkowski told Food Dive and being able to communicate with the person delivering customers their orders makes the experience more enjoyable and practical. When customers see their food items delivered by the driver, they are assured that their order is safe with the driver.

Peapod as an early pioneer in online grocery shopping, has invested in technology to ensure that it can stay competitive with its competitors. It hasn't had as big of an impact on the industry as other delivery services for groceries like Instacart or Amazon Fresh. But the 28-year veteran of the online grocery delivery wars is attempting to boost its competitiveness by expanding its e-commerce offerings. It launched a new mobile experience that is based on the PRISM platform which is exclusive to Ahold Delhaize USA, and its own sites.
