Discount chains such as Lidl and Aldi have increased their market share, putting pressure on the more expensive British grocery store. However, Waitrose still ranks first in a recent survey conducted by Market Force Information on customer perceptions of seven supermarket chains. The survey was conducted with 4300 customers who rated supermarkets based on their assortment, layout and cleanliness.

In the course of the coronavirus pandemic Waitrose has introduced additional measures to safeguard customers and staff. Customers are required to bring only one person to shop and wear a mask or scarf. Hand sanitisers are located at the entrance of every shop. Waitrose offers a Volunteer's Card for customers who self-isolate, allowing family members and friends to pick up orders on behalf of the shopper.
