You can control this Roomba remotely via the iRobot app to schedule cleaning sessions and even create virtual barriers that block it from entering spaces you don't want it enter. It can even identify and navigate stairs, and return to the docking station to recharge when it runs out of power. Unlike previous Roomba models it can remember where it left off and resume the clean. It can also run straight lines to increase its efficiency.

5. iRobot Roomba 980S

It even was able to fit under our sofas, which is where the space is smaller than other models we've tested.

iRobot Roomba 960XP

This robot's powerful suction, HEPA filter, and two-hour battery life make it one of the top options for those with severe cleaning needs. It ditched the nickel metal hydroide battery of past models to go with a lithium ion model that will last longer in cleaning sessions and between charges.

The minimal display can be difficult to use for family members who don't have smartphones. It's also more expensive than other robots with similar features.

iRobot Roomba 960XL

The top of the line robot from iRobot is available for PS900. It includes CarpetBoost which gives it incredible cleaning power. This is the most powerful and intelligent Roomba ever made. It does an incredible job on both carpets and hard floors.

It uses vision sensors to perform VSLAM (Visual Simultaneous Mapping and Localization). This allows it to locate points of interest such as chairs, shelves and beds and then creates a map of the space to help it remember where it is.

It also uses cameras to detect dirt spots and can increase suction power for these areas. It can be launched from the app, while you're at work. It will clean and vacuum automatically. It also does a great job picking up pet hair. Our tests showed that it picked up 0.2 1 ounces of pet hair on midpiles low-pile, mid-pile and hardwood.

iRobot Roomba 960XL

The 980XL is a premium model, and the additional features make it worth the cost. It is more sophisticated mapping system than the 900-series and is cleaner both on carpet and hard flooring. You can also start it by remote.

It also has an efficient cleaning system that includes ten times the power-lifting suction capacity of older Roombas and has a dual-swivelling brush that can reach corners and even under furniture. It even has the ability to automatically mop your floors after it vacuums.

It's not the most quiet however, especially when using the carpet boost feature. We measured it at around 80 dB--about as loud as prop planes flying overhead. Luckily, you can use an electronic barrier to keep it from sensitive areas like the dog's food and water bowls.
